WALLA WALLA -- Police arrested Frank P. Tamayo, 27, for allegedly firing shots in the air from a moving vehicle today.
According to a news release, police received a call of about four or five shots fired near Isaacs Avenue and Ash Street at roughly 1:16 a.m. A Walla Walla County sheriff's deputy located a suspicious vehicle leaving the area, and began following it.
As the deputy followed the 2002 Dodge Neon, someone inside the car fired three more shots into the air near Eighth Avenue and Moore Street, according to the press release.
Officers from multiple agencies, including Walla Walla and College Place police, stopped the car near Pine and Bowman streets. Police arrested Tamayo on investigation of two counts of drive-by shooting and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm. Police also arrested Mario R. Deleon, 29, on an unrelated warrant.
Both men are gang members, police said. They reportedly were backseat passengers in the car, which also was occupied by two women.
"There was no intended target, and no motive," said Walla Walla police Sgt. Chris Buttice, adding police stopped the car roughly six minutes after dispatch received the first report.
Buttice added police found a .38-caliber revolver in the vehicle.
