MILTON-FREEWATER — The Mac-Hi boys wrapped up their first perfect regular season since 2008 Tuesday with a 4-0 non-league soccer victory over visiting Riverside.
The Pioneers, ranked No. 1 in Oregon’s Class 4A, stand at 13-0 (9-0 in Greater Oregon League play) entering the first round of state playoffs next Tuesday.
“As a team we played fantastic today,” Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. “Really great finish. We’re playing good as a team (heading into playoffs).”
The Class 3A Pirates (9-2-1) entered the match ranked No. 5 amongst Oregon’s lower three classifications, and fought to a 1-0 deficit at the half.
But Mac-Hi proved too much for the Pirates as the Pioneers scored three more goals to put the match out of reach in the second.
Juan Martinez and Jose Aguilar each provided a goal for the Pioneers while Alex Saldana scored twice.
“Riverside, they are always a good match, it was pretty even,” Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. “They didn’t allow us to do much, but once we scored the first goal it opened up and we ended up creating a lot of spaces.”
Saul Ortiz made five saves for the Pioneers to record a shutout.
Eight of Mac-Hi’s victories have been shutouts, with the Pioneers outscoring their opponents 73-7 on the season.
Mac-Hi’s opponent in the first round of playoffs has yet to be determined.
