Whitman women win own invite

WALLA WALLA — The Whitman Women’s Cross Country team took first place in the 2012 Whitman Invitational at Fort Walla Walla Saturday.

Seniors Emilie Gilbert, Katri Gilbert and Shannon McCarty paced the Missionaries, finishing third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Kelsey Klettke from Lewis-Clark State finished first with a time of 23 minutes and 41.15 seconds. Whitman won the team event with 31 points, LC State finished second overall with 39, and Pacific Lutheran finished third with 62.

Whitman, ranked fifth in the West Region, showed its experience in defeating two strong Northwest cross country teams. Emilie Gilbert, coming off a victory in this race a year ago, finished with a time of 24:15.81. Katri Gilbert, crossed the finish line 12 seconds behind her and McCarty came in 11 seconds after Gilbert.

Whitman’s next event is at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle, Wash., on Sept. 15th.
