WALLA WALLA — Freshman midfielder Sergio Burgos scored two goals and assisted on another Sunday afternoon to help lead Walla Walla Community College to a 5-3 victory over the College of Idaho in a men’s collegiate soccer match at Warrior Field.
The Warriors improved their early-season record to 3-0 with the triumph in their 2012 home opener.
WWCC tallied the match’s first goal within the first five minutes of play. Burgos booted a corner kick that forward Max Smith one-timed into the C of I goal from point-blank range just 4:31 after the opening whistle.
The goal was the lone marker in a first half that disappointed Walla Walla coach Chad Bodnar.
“The speed of play was so slow,” Bodnar said. “We were a little sloppy at the beginning. We didn’t play well in the first half.”
College of Idaho’s Emilio Yomaha knotted the score at 1-1 with a blast from the top of the 18-yard box at 58:11.
Burgos put the Warriors up for keeps three-and-a-half minutes later. After being initially stoned on a breakaway by C of I goalie John French, Burgos collected the rebound and kicked his second opportunity into the back of the net with 61:41 elapsed in the match.
Less than three minutes after that, Smith delivered a cross from the right wing to the goalie box that French punched away. But Burgos gained possession in the goal area and hammered a shot that rocketed just under the cross bar at 64:03 that resulted in a 3-1 lead.
Both teams added two goals apiece in the closing minutes. Hugo Monroy and Zach Russell scored for WWCC.
“We played better in the second half, especially in the first 25 minutes,” Bodnar said. “We played harder.
“We were able to give some guys a chance to play,” Bodnar said. “We’re still trying to figure out who goes where. These are good games for us.”
