UMATILLA — Mac-Hi won its first volleyball match of the season Tuesday, defeating non-league foe Umatilla in four sets, 25-11, 25-19, 24-26 and 25-22.
“It was funny because we came out with this calm, awesome intensity,” Mac-Hi coach Kaila Rodighiero said. “Umatilla had to get worked up a little bit, but my girls came out ready. They had to fight for every point in every match. My girls (Mac-Hi) just kept a level intensity for the entire match, and that’s what I’ve always asked for from them.”
Mackenzie Fite led the Pioneers (1-0) with 22 assists and was a shiny 25-for-26 from the line with one ace.
Jessica Dodd scored 7 aces while going 17-for-18 from the line with six kills.
“We had good serving,” Rodghiero said. “Jessica (Dodd) and Mackenzie (Fite), they both rallied under pressure in the first game. They’re going to be my really strong servers this year.”
Megan Reed picked up 15 digs, while Reed and Avery Wells contributed 6 kills each.
“They (the Pioneers) were all over the place today — it was awesome,” Rodighiero said.
Mac-Hi travels to Boardman, Ore., Saturday to take part in the Riverside Tournament.
