Walker's steps into former Wilcox locations

The transition of the former Wilcox Furniture retail stores into Walker’s Furniture & Mattress outlets has officially taken place. The Milton-Freewater main store and outlet, 85332 Highway 11, opened last Saturday under the new ownership.

Operators are unveiling the new stores with a “sneak peek sale.”

The new ownership was announced by Wilcox last April. The Wilcox family, including brothers John, Bruce and Alan Wilcox, said they planned to close the business after more than six decades of operation since it was founded in 1951 by their uncle Charles Wilcox and later taken over in 1959 by their parents, Les and Joyce Wilcox.

John Wilcox, president, said the decision was a personal one and not reflective of any turbulence in the business.

At the time he said most of the 70 people employed at the company’s five stores — Hermiston Pendelton and at Stateline in Milton-Freewater — would be able to carry on under the new operators.

Spokane-based Walker’s is a 32-year-old company with showrooms in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Kennewick, East Wenatchee, Yakima, Walla Walla and Coeur d’Alene, in addition to its new Oregon stores. To reach the newest stores, call 541-938-6499 for the main store and 541-938-6074 for the outlet.
