WALLA WALLA — A 20-year-old man was flown to Kadlec Medical Center after a high-speed crash into a parked semi-truck Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office a Dodge pickup driven by Mario Estrada Torres, 31, slammed into the rear of a parked semi-trailer on Dodd Road, east of State Route 125 at about 2:31 p.m.
The pickup was traveling between 55 and 60 mph according to Undersheriff Edward Freyer, who added Torres was able to get out of the pickup on his own.
“Most of the impact was on the passenger side of the pickup truck,” Freyer said.
Passenger Joshua P. McCormick, 20, suffered severe leg injuries, according to Freyer, and was flown by MedStar helicopter to Kadlec Medical Center.
According to Freyer drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision. Freyer said the cause is being listed as inattention, but there is some evidence Torres may have fallen asleep.
