WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi never got started against Southridge Thursday night.
The Blue Devils (0-2) fell to the Suns in three uneven sets, 25-15, 25-13, and 25-14.
“Fundamentally, Southridge showed up and beat us,” Wa-Hi assistant coach Kim McDaniels said. “Southridge is like us, they’re a young team, but they showed up mentally, and we just weren’t there tonight.”
The Blue Devils, who graduated 10 seniors from a squad that went .500 in league play and won a district championship in 2011, struggled with confidence in the abbreviated match, McDaniels said.
“There were times where our confidence was up and at those times we were able to go on runs,” McDaniels said. “But our confidence just wasn’t there for the most part and we weren’t putting things away.”
Torri Crawford led the Blue Devils with six kills, four blocks and three aces.
Katie Green had eight assists and Kassidy Willard picked up 9 digs.
The Blue Devils travel to face Hanford Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“They’re young,” McDaniels said of the Blue Devils, who have two seniors, four juniors and six sophomores that see time. “They need to see more playing time. They need to get in these situations more often and I think from that they will get continued competitiveness.”
