Enterprise holds off Bulldogs, 20-14

ENTERPRISE, Ore. — Dayton brushed itself off after a season-opening loss to Stanfield to duke it out with Enterprise here Thursday night, but the Outlaws wound up on the winning end of a 20-14 score.

“It was kind of a back and forth game,” Bulldogs coach Dean Bickelhaupt said. “We’d march down the field, and they’d march down the field.”

A Dayton first-quarter fumble gave Enterprise good field position, and the Outlaws took advantage to score the first touchdown of the game.

The Bulldogs tied it up in the second quarter as the “run game got going pretty good,” Bickelhaupt said.

Dayton quarterback Lowden Smith took it in from 15 yards out for the score.

But the Outlaws took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for the score and a 14-6 halftime lead.

Enterprise punched it in again in the third quarter, and the Bulldogs put together an 80-yard drive to score with two minutes remaining as Smith hit Wyatt Frame for a 20-yard touchdown.

The Bulldogs tried an onsides kick, but didn’t recover and without any timeouts left, the Outlaws ran the clock out.

“We ended on a positive note, I was happy with that,” Bickelhaupt said.

“We played a lot better,” he said of the Bulldogs’ effort in Enterprise, compared to their 47-6 loss to Stanfield last week. “It was a good game, evenly matched. We just had too many mistakes again. You take those out and we’d be ahead a little bit.”

Dayton opens Southeast 2B League play next Friday when Asotin comes to town.

“I think if we keep progressing, we have a good shot a getting a ‘W,’” Bickelhaupt said.
