Panthers edge Pirates in old rivalry

ASOTIN — Pomeroy fell just short of Asotin here Thursday night as the Panthers prevailed 28-26, 22-25, 18-25, 25-11, 15-8 in a non-league volleyball match between old rivals.

It was the season opener for both schools.

Mackie Monahan led the Pirates at the net with 13 kills and Savannah Ruark collected five blocks. Monahan also had four serving aces.

Ireland Mayfield led Pomeroy’s floor game with 28 assists. McKenzie Uto was the team’s digs leader with six, and she also led the Pirates in serving by going 22-for-23.

“This was two young teams in a good, hard-fought battle,” Pirates coach Bruce Crossfield said. “We were able to see some things we need to work on.”

Crossfield and the Pirates get another chance Tuesday when they entertain Colton in another non-league match.
