Banged up Pirates take care of Lewis County

CRAIGMONT, Idaho — Pomeroy limped home from Bellingham after a season-opening loss to Lummi last Saturday missing two of its senior starters.

Austin Reisdorph, a fullback and middle linebacker, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

Starting quarterback Ryan Smith had a high ankle sprain.

Smith missed the Pirates’ game at Lewis County here Friday night, but the backups replacing the lost seniors played admirably as Pomeroy evened its record at 1-1 with a 32-12 victory.

“It was a good game for us to get our replacements in,” Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates said. “They did a fine job. The more time they have, the better they’ll get.”

Smith could return this week as the Pirates prepare to host Clearwater Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, but sophomore Kade Snyder filled in at QB as Pomeroy opened up a 12-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

“He’s doing a fine job,” Bates said of Snyder.

The Pirates scored 14 points in the third, and capped it with a touchdown in the fourth while Lewis County put up TDs in the second and fourth quarters.

“Defensively, we were having trouble at first,” Bates said. “Our defensive coordinator adjusted things, and by halfway through the second quarter it was taken care of pretty well.”

Brendan Lueck provided much of the Pirate offense, scoring five rushing touchdowns while piling up 238 yards on 21 carries.

“Lueck was playing behind seniors last year, and now he’s a senior and getting his chance,” Bates said. “He’s stepped up for us the last two weeks. We’re very happy with his production the last two games.”

Lueck had scoring runs of 62 and eight yards in the first quarter, took it in from the 4 and then unleashed a 50-yard scamper in the third quarter, and finished Pirate scoring with a 17-yarder in the fourth quarter.

“We’d like to throw a little more if we can,” Bates said of Pomeroy’s offense. “We’re still working on that, but with our starting QB out we’re getting experience.

“We have a learning curve hat has to be dealt with,” he said. “More time, more experience, and we’ll improve.”
