KENNEWICK — The Blue Devils struck first against the Southridge Suns Saturday in Mid-Columbia Conference girls’ soccer, but Wa-Hi was unable to make the early 1-0 lead stand as Southridge scored three goals in the second half en route to a 3-1 victory.
Maggie Callan scored the Blue Devil goal on a pass from Bridgit Lyons in the 36th minute.
“It was just an amazing shot from outside the 18 (yard line) which landed in the corner of the net,” Wa-Hi coach Jesse Cruz said. “It was a very nice sequence.”
Southridge’s Michelle Poster answered with a goal on a penalty kick after the break.
“From that point on the morale of the team went down,” Cruz said. “They were working hard, but they couldn’t connect with what was going on. They were just in shock and they couldn’t get it.”
Hannah Sanders added another goal for the Suns and Poster scored her second goal of the day with time winding down to reach the final score of 3-1.
“They were working too hard for the simple stuff,” Cruz said. The girls played hard, we need to have a little more communication. We are a better team than we showed today.”
Wa-Hi is now 1-1 in league and 1-2 overall. The Blue Devils host Hanford Tuesday at 4 p.m.
