WALLA WALLA — Fire District 4 commissioners are considering a proposal to annex roughly 1,000 acres in the Mill Creek area to keep up with development.
The area to be annexed is centered primarily east of Mill Creek Road near the Kooskooskie development, where the district boundary ends.
“When this boundary line was put in 40 years ago, there were no homes in there. That was all wildland area. And the fire district was put in to protect homes,” Fire Chief Rocky Eastman said.
According to district officials, all 12 affected property owners petitioned the district to be annexed.
If approved by fire commissioners, those property owners will pay an additional yearly tax of $1.15 per $1,000 of assessed property value, in addition to any current Department of Natural Resources fire protection assessment fees.
A public hearing regarding the annexation will take place on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the District 4 fire station, 2251 S. Howard St.
