ORANGE, Calif. — Maurice Alfonso’s unassisted goal with less than 14 minutes to play broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted Chapman University to a 3-2 non-league men’s soccer victory over Whitman College here Sunday.
The loss dropped Whitman’s season record to 2-3-1 heading into the Missionaries’ first weekend of Northwest Conference play. Whitman entertains Willamette University Saturday and Lewis & Clark Sunday, with both matches scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The Missionaries enjoyed a 1-0 lead when Junpei Tsuji scored unassisted at 17:07 of the first half. But the lead didn’t last long.
Alfonso got Chapman on the board at 31:16 off an assist from Nick Valazquez that knotted the score at 1-1. And Duncan Capriotti’s unassisted goal a little over 11 minutes later put the home team on top 2-1 as the team’s headed into halftime.
The Whits proved resilient in the second half as Leland Matthaeus scored unassisted at the 65:02 mark to forge a 2-2 tie. That was the extent of the scoring until Alfonso’s second goal decided the match.
Whitman outshot Chapman 17-15, but the home team proved more accurate with a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Missionary goalkeeper Michael Bathurst was credited with seven saves.
