Voters should allow universities to invest

Senate Joint Resolution 8223 changes the state constitution to give the University of Washington and Washington State University more freedom to invest in private stocks and bonds as authorized by the Legislature.

Given the dramatic need to fund higher education, this seems a prudent move.

The people have already given the same authority to those who invest retirement and pension funds. This proposal, which had strong bipartisan support in the House and Senate, gives more options to those investing money on behalf of the two largest state universities.

We urge voters to approve SJR8223.
