PASCO — The Waitsburg-Prescott boys took the top two spots in the 5-kilometer race at a District 9 cross country meet Wednesday, but was unable to come away with a win as Tri-Cities Prep took places three through eight to earn a meet win.
Waitsburg-Prescott finished second out of five teams. Pomeroy placed fourth.
“The boys ran well today — we regarded this meet as a workout and they ran a smart race,” W-P coach Joanna Lanning wrote in an email. “Seth Deal lead from start to finish and no one threatened his position.”
Deal, a senior, outpaced his nearest competitor, W-P’s Tewedros McDowell, by almost a minute. Deal finished the race in 17 minutes and 1 second.
Freshman McDowell, who placed second, ran the race in 18-flat.
“Tewedros McDowell did extremely well again,” Lanning wrote. “He shows tremendous potential and ability. He is new to the sport and has standout Seth Deal for a terrific role model.”
E.J. Meserve finished 10th in 19:42, Corey Braxton 12th in 20:08, Jacob Dingfield 20th in 20:25, and Kevin Kamel 24th in 21:47.
“I saw improvement where it needed to be and (I) am proud of all their efforts,” Lanning said of the W-P runners.
Tyler Maki led Pomeroy with a 22nd-place finish in 21:18.
W-P next races Saturday at the Seaport Invite in Clarkston, Wash.
