WALLA WALLA — Starting Sunday, recreational boaters will be able to lock past dams on the lower Snake and Columbia rivers almost any time during daylight hours.
The change from scheduled locking times to “on-request” lockages occurs to accommodate changing volumes of river traffic during the winter and summer. The winter lockage season will continue through May 14 at all the dams, which are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Commercial vessels will continue to have precedence over recreational vessels. Recreational vessels may be allowed to lock through with commercial vessels at the discretion of the lock operator.
The dams in the Walla Walla District affected by the change are McNary Dam on the Columbia River and Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose and Lower Granite dams on the lower Snake River.
