DAYTON — Mackie Monahan, Savannah Ruark and McKenzie Uto combined for 22 kills here Thursday night as Pomeroy defeated Dayton in straight sets in a non-league volleyball match.
With Monahan registering 11 kills, Ruark six and Uto five, the Pirates prevailed 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 for their first victory of the season after a pair of early defeats. Dayton is 0-2 on the season.
“After two tough five-set losses that could have gone either way to start the season, it was good to get our first win on the road against a scrappy Dayton team,” Pomeroy coach Bruce Crossfield said.
“We are continuing to improve,” Crossfield added. “This was a good win on the road in front of a boisterous crowd.”
Ireland Mayfield led Pomeroy with 21 assists. Ruark collected three blocks to go with her six kills and Ally Bott served up four aces.
Dayton was led by McKayla Bickelhaupt’s six kills and one block. Madison Mings had a team-high six blocks and Lexie Ramirez chipped in with two blocks. Chelsea Wooldridge was 10-for-11 serving and put up 10 assists.
“We just couldn’t put anything together,” Dayton coach Shannon Turner said. “Our passing was off and therefore we couldn’t set up our offense.
“We just had an off night,” Turner added. “When we played Garfield-Palouse in our first game, we looked like a completely different team. We have some kinks to work out, and we will get it figured out.”
Pomeroy returns to action next Tuesday when it entertains Asotin in another non-league match. Dayton plays Saturday at the Waitsbsurg-Prescott tournament in Waitsburg.
