PORTLAND (AP) — Union-Bulletin photographer Jeff Horner won second- and third-place awards for feature photography in this year’s Washington-Oregon Associated Press Photo Contest.
Joshua Trujillo of seattlepi.com and Paul T. Erickson of the Tri-City Herald won the top awards in the contest.
Trujillo’s iconic photo of an 84-year-old activist dripping with pepper spray during an Occupy Seattle protest won the Cowles Cup. The judges praised the photo for capturing the protesters’ passion and connecting the viewer to the event “on a more personal level.”
Erickson’s “Turnin’ and Burnin,’” a dramatic in-cockpit photo of an Air National Guard pilot preparing for an airshow, won the Reid Blackburn Memorial Award for the best feature photo.
The winners were announced Thursday.
