Many outlying schools see improved assessment results

Assessment results from spring 2012 show improved performance over 2011 for many students in Columbia and Garfield counties, and the outlying areas of Walla Walla County.

The most recent results from the Measurement of Student Progress, given to all elementary and middle school students in Washington, and from the statewide High School Proficiency Exam, were released by the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in late August. The published results show the percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards in each test group.

A tabulation of the results is shown here for students in outlying schools in selected grades. Also shown are results for end-of-course exams taken by high school students in first-year and second-year math and in biology. Combined averages of results for the selected grades for each school district were also calculated.

In Dayton, approximately 73 percent of students in the selected groups met or exceeded state standards. This compares with 69.7 percent statewide, and shows strong improvement over the 65.4 percent average for Dayton students in 2011.

In one highlight for Dayton, 100 percent of fourth-graders met or exceeded standards for reading, compared with 71.4 percent statewide.

Waitsburg and Touchet students showed significant improvement in 2012 over 2011. However, the overall percentages of students meeting or exceeding standards for both schools were somewhat below state averages.

Overall performance for Pomeroy students remained consistent from 2011 to 2012, with averages barely below state averages.

In Prescott, scores remained below state averages, and dropped somewhat from 2011 to 2012.

Assessment results for Starbuck and Dixie elementary schools, which each have fewer than 30 total students, were not included in the data released by OSPI. This is due to their policy of not disclosing results for individual test groups of less than 10 students.
