BAKER — The Mac-Hi girls soccer team trailed Baker early, 2-0, but responded to tie the match at halftime and ultimately win, 6-4, Saturday in the Pioneers’ Greater Oregon League opener.
“Our most valuable player of the game was freshman Alexis Breeding,” Pioneer coach Martin Martinez said. “She got us rolling with the first goal and had three assists out of our six goals. Veronica Garcia had a great game too with three goals of her own.”
Astrid Hernandez and Becca Betts added goals for Mac-Hi in the road win.
The Pioneers (2-1-1, 1-0 GOL) host Ontario Saturday at noon.
“We really got going in that second half and playing well together when we scored four goals,” Martinez said. “We made some mistakes overall to allow goals but we also did a lot of scoring ourselves.”
The forest fire smoke and higher elevation caused havoc on the Pioneers rotation as they had to substitute players in and out to keep them rested.
