Local Curves fitness clubs are commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an incentive for new members.

During the first two weeks of October, joining fees will be waived for new members who show proof of a mammogram from the last year or who donate $25 to the American Cancer Society.

The offer is valid at the Walla Walla Curves, 2200 Melrose St., suite 3, or the Milton-Freewater gym, 15 N. Columbia St.

Risk management, early detection and early treatment are the themes of the month at nationwide Curves outlets.

"Our annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign is an important part of the Curves mission to strengthen women," said Curves founder Diane Heavin, in a prepared statement. "We offer a supportive, fun, noncompetitive environment that encourages women to take time out from their roles as caregivers to take care of themselves."

Last year, Curves clubs across the country raised more than $1.7 million for the American Cancer Society. For more details about the efforts, contact the local clubs (522-7888, Walla Walla; or 541-938-6996, Milton-Freewater) or visit curves.com.
