Ontario hands Pioneer girls first GOL soccer defeat

MILTON-FREEWATER — Veronica Garcia’s goal in the 25th minute was not enough here Saturday as Mac-Hi suffered its first Greater Oregon League girls soccer loss of the season.

The Pioneers were defeated by Ontario, 5-1, at Shockman Field.

Saturday’s setback dropped Mac-Hi to 1-1 in the GOL and 3-1-1 overall.

The Pioneers came close to breaking out on top just two minutes after the opening whistle. But an attempt by Garcia, stationed on the left side of the pitch, rattled off the near goal post.

Mac-Hi trailed 2-0 before Garcia’s goal — a tally struck just outside the left portion of the 18-yard box.

Roughly five minutes prior to Garcia’s goal, Pioneers’ Makia Carlson (knee) and Becca Betts (hamstring) suffered injuries that seemed to put more of a damper on the day for the Pioneers, according to coach Martin Martinez.

The injury bug was also evident prior to Saturday’s kickoff. Mac-Hi played without regular starting goalie Alejandra Olmos due to injury.

“I told the girls that even the best teams lose,” Martinez said. “I told them ‘Let’s learn from our mistakes.’ The girls were good about it.”

Mac-Hi’s next match is a GOL counter on Thursday at La Grande. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
