Pirates get outslugged by Sunnyside Christian

SUNNYSIDE — Pomeroy quarterback Ryan Smith continued his return from a high ankle sprain earlier this season to rush for 262 yards and four touchdowns against Sunnyside Christian Friday night.

But the Knights combined a potent ground game with some big pass plays to win a 42-28 Southeast 1B League decision with the Pirates here Friday night.

“We outplayed them in the first and fourth quarters,” Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates said. “They outplayed us in the second and third quarters. But they’re outplaying was more than ours.”

Indeed, the Pirates held a 16-6 lead after the opening quarter after Smith scored on runs of 51 and 88 yards.

“It’s good to have him back,” Bates said of Smith, who returned last week in Pomeroy’s 64-28 victory over St. John-Endicott but is still recovering from the injury. “He’s probably 90 percent right now, and he’s getting stronger as he heals up. He’s getting his speed and quickness back, and he has the ability to run the option for us.”

But after the Pirates’ quick first quarter, Sunnyside Christian responded with 20 second-quarter points to none for Pomeroy. Luke Wavrin caught passes of 24 and 22 yards from Knights QB Wyatt Hoff, and John Newhouse took it in from 21 yards out.

“They ran the ball against us consistently, but didn’t break the big ones,” Bates said. “They got a few passes on us long, but they had sustained drives and controlled the ball. We had a hard time doing that until the fourth quarter, again.”

The Knights increased their lead to 34-16 in the third quarter before the Pirates’ offense woke up in the fourth quarter with scores of 20 and 23 yards by Smith.

Wavrin’s final TD from the 3 finalized the score.

Hoff ended up with 263 yards passing for three touchdowns for Sunnyside Christian.

Newhouse racked up 143 yards on 19 carries.

The Pirates put up 327 yards on the ground, but compiled only 37 yards through the air.

Pomeroy, now 1-1 in league and 2-3 overall, hosts LaCrosse-Washtucna (2-0, 4-1) Friday.

“They’re doing well so far,” Bates said of the Tigercats, who defeated Colton 62-20 Friday night. “We’ll have to be ready to go when we play them this Friday.”
