T-O-R's big second quarter keys 34-0 win over Dayton

OAKESDALE — Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia put up 22 points in the second quarter here Friday night and rolled to a 34-0 victory over Dayton in a battle of Southeast 2B league football teams.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-3 in league and 0-5 overall.

A first-quarter fumble led directly to the game’s first score. T-O-R’s Jesse Johnson scooped up the loose pigskin and raced 29 yards for a touchdown with 8:41 left in the first quarter.

“That’s been our story of the year,” Dayton coach Dean Bickelhaupt said. “Miscues always get us early.”

In the second quarter, Dayton had no answer for T-O-R’s Craig Nelson. He caught touchdown passes of 15 and 20 yards from quarterback Ryan Maley, scored on a 4-yard run, and tackled Bulldog running back Johnny Sanchez in the end zone for a safety.

When the dust cleared, the Nighthawks found themselves on the long end of a 28-0 halftime score.

Maley, who completed 12-of-14 pass for 189 yards, threw his third touchdown pass of the night — a 40-yard strike to Brock Shelton — with 7:31 left in the third quarter to end the game’s scoring.

“We were shutting down the run game, then they went to the air more than I thought they would,” Bickelhaupt said. “They’re a good team with skilled kids. They are playing pretty good football. They are not too bad.”

Friday’s game was Isaiah Lambert’s first as Dayton’s starting quarterback due to an injury sustain by Lowden Smith, Bickelhaupt said. Smith started at running back.

Smith led the Bulldogs with 71 yards rushing on 22 carries.

“We’re trying to get some timing down and trying to make things work,” Bickelhaupt said. “The defense is playing fine, but we can’t get anything rolling on the offensive side of the ball.”

Dayton hosts Waitsburg-Prescott next Friday night.
