ATHENA — The Weston-McEwen TigerScots volleyball team dazzled the home crowd with a dual victory over Heppner and Pilot Rock Satuday.
Heppner, the No. 3-ranked team in state, was beaten 26-24, 13-25, 19-25, 26-24 and 15-12.
The TigerScots were equally victorious against Pilot Rock but in straight sets, 25-21, 25-11 and 25-21.
The previously ranked No. 6 team in state, the TigerScots are taking it one match at a time and are focused on winning the Blue Mountain Conference, W-M coach Shawn White said.
“It was a nice rally against Heppner to come back from three games to one,” White said. “It is a good feeling to stay undefeated in league with so many good teams in our conference this year. We have to compete against three teams in the top 10 in state in Heppner, Grant Union and Union.”
W-M plays again Thursday at home at 6 p.m. against Elgin, and that will complete the first round of league play.
Statistical leaders in the dual meet for W-M included Taryn Coffman with 62 assists and six blocks. Molly von Borstel contributed 37 digs, 33 kills and four aces.
McKayla Carlin added 45 digs and was 46-for-46 serving with three aces. Keegan Sheperd had six kills and four blocks. Marlene Bodmer blocked seven returns and slammed nine kills, and Melanie Sederburg had 18 kills and four blocks.
As a team, the TigerScots had 21 blocks in the two matches, and the blocks were crucial to their victory over Heppner.
“Most of our blocks came against Heppner,” White said. “And that was important to slow down their attack at the net with the blocks and the deflections to return some of their spikes and possible kills.”
