TOUCHET — Touchet High School hammered Garfield-Palouse 17-0 and 10-5 here Friday afternoon in a Southeast 1B softball doubleheader.

“The girls have been working real hard at picking up the ball early and trying to make good decisions at the plate,” Touchet coach Gary Dorman said. “It is starting to pay off. We have spent a lot of time on the batting machine and with some live pitching.”

Touchet got 15 hits in the opener and eight hits in the nightcap.

The Indians got two respectable performances from their starting pitchers, Makayla Bishop and Harlie Schaeffer. Both threw complete games.

Schaeffer struck out seven and was good enough to get the win. Bishop allowed only one hit and two walks in her five innings of work.

“Harlie struggled a little bit in game two,” Dorman said. “But you know it is hard to keep focused when you win game one by such a large margin. We relaxed a little bit too much and got a little lethargic.”

Bishop struck out five and didn’t allow any runs in game one.

“Makayla did an excellent job,” Dorman said. “She has really turned into a top notch pitcher for us this year. Since she is a junior, we really like to see that.”

Four Touchet players had at least two hits in game one and four more had a single hit in the attack.

Cierra McKeown walked to open the game. Schaeffer hit a grounder and McKeown used her speed to score from first base on a wild throw to first.

Touchet held a 1-0 lead before exploding for 10 runs in the third inning.

Schaeffer and Kristen Warner hit back-to-back doubles to score a run. Bishop singled in Warner to make it 3-0 and stole second.

Melissa Creek bunted herself aboard and Bishop snuck in to score on the play. Creek stole second and Morgan Cardwell hit an infield single.

With runners at second and third Jen Aceves hit a two-RBI single.

Megan Kromm doubled in Aceves and Lexi Sturm walked. The runners moved up on a wild pitch. Schaeffer grounded out to score Aceves and Sturm crossed home as G-P committed a throwing error while trying for the double play at third.

Warner knocked in the ninth run of the game on a single and Bishop followed with another single. Creek singled in the final two runs of the inning to push Touchet’s lead to 11-0.

Touchet added a single run in the fourth and five more in the fifth.

Touchet had another big inning in game two to break open what was a close game to that point.

The Indians led 4-2 going into the fifth but scored five more in that frame on a Cardwell double ad five Vikings errors to take a commanding 9-2 lead.

Touchet (6-1 overall, 4-0 league) takes to the field again Tuesday, April 9, at home against Tri-Cities Prep.
