MISSION — DeSales High School’s Ryan Baumgart won the Wildhorse Invite Monday after a two-hole playoff with Waitsburg-Prescott’s Dakota Baker.

The duo finished the par-72 course tied at 69 strokes. Baker missed a 12-foot birdie putt for the win on the first hole in the playoff, and Baumgart sank a 10-footer on the next green for the win, his second in a row at the Invite after winning last year with a 68.

For Baker, who golfs for W-P but practices and competes with DeSales, it was his best score ever.

“It’s just a great experience for those kids, and Dakota was just ecstatic,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “He was calling everyone and telling them. Knowing his situation, it is just fantastic.”

On the girls side, DeSales’ Emily Baumgart and Hermiston’s Madison Welch co-medaled at 82 strokes each.

Welch won a one-hole playoff to take the top award, sinking a par putt while Emily Baumgart 3-putted for a bogey.

Hanford won the boys team event with a team score of 299. Southridge took second (315) and Hermiston third (319). DeSales finished one stroke shy of tying for third out of 10 boys teams with a 320, and Wa-Hi finished sixth in 327 strokes. Mac-Hi shot 358.

“Our team score was the best it’s been all year,” Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. “But again, we’re leaving just too many strokes out there. That’s two matches in a row where we’ve been playing on big greens, and that’s what we’ve been struggling with right now. We’re hitting greens, we’re just not putting well right now.”

For DeSales’ Jerod Konen carded a 76, good for sixth place, Bryce Scott 87, Scott Kimball 88 and Dan Schaefer 98. The top four out of five boys scores counted toward each school’s team score.

Dean Atkinson shot a 77 to lead the Blue Devils, Nick Atwood 79, Nate Towner 82, Troy Aguilar 89 and Tyler Morrison 91.

Andrew Kain led Mac-Hi with an 82. Rain Wheeler shot 86, Sterling Sandberg 90, Tyler Williams 100 and Dalton Wesner 101.

Ashton Montgomery carded a 97 for the Irish, good enough for sixth place overall.

The Blue Devils visit Horn Rapids for a Mid-Columbia Conference POD match Monday.

DeSales hosts an 18-hole District 9 West Schools match at Veterans Memorial Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Mac-Hi hosts the Mac-Hi Invite Friday at the Milton-Freewater Municipal Golf Course at noon.
