The Columbia County Republican Party has announced the names of its candidates to replace Columbia County Sheriff Walt Hessler, who is retiring in June
The party selected Rocky Miller and Jeffery Jenkins as candidates to present to the county commissioners. Commissioners will appoint one of them to serve the remaining 18 months of Hessler’s term.
In a letter sent to commissioners, the party identified Miller as their first preferred candidate and Jenkins as their second.
Miller is currently the Washington State trooper serving the Dayton area, and Jenkins works as a deputy in the sheriff’s office.
Tom Bensel, the party chairman, said that a total of five candidates expressed interest in the sheriff position, but the other three did not follow through by submitting a resume and cover letter for consideration.
“We were really pleased with both candidates. They both presented themselves well,” he said.
Commissioners will consider the candidates during their regular meeting on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. in the Columbia County Courthouse.
