Defending Class 1B state champ Wildcats sweep softball twin bill with Bulldogs

COLTON — Dayton matched Colton hit-for-hit here Tuesday, and the Bulldogs played sound defense most of the afternoon.

But they couldn’t slow down the Wildcats’ potent offense as the defending Class 1B state champions swept Class 2B Dayton 10-7 and 7-3 in a non-league softball doubleheader.

“They just hit the ball really, really well,” Dayton assistant coach Desirae Robins said. “They are historically a very good program, and they were very opportune with their hits.

Colton led 8-1 after three innings of play in the first game and held the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the way. Dayton then struck for two runs in the first inning of the nightcap only to see Colton rebound with a three-run first inning and a two-run second.

“We started off the second game with two runs on three hits in the first inning,” Robins said, noting that Dayton had outhit Colton 12-8 in the opener. “I felt like we were going to bounce back from that loss, but then we lost our bats. We played pretty good defense, but Colton can hit.”

Jessica Tate had four hits in the first game for Dayton, Sam Harting added three hits and Sarah Phillips and Courtney Mings contributed two hits each. One of Harting’s hits was a home run, Phillips stole three bases and Mings contributed a pair of sacrifice hits.

Six Bulldogs contributed one hit each in the second game.

Dayton, now 5-2, will try to rebound from its first two losses of the season on April 12 when the Bulldogs travel to Walla Walla to face DeSales in a Southeast 2B District doubleheader.

Dayton is 2-0 in league play.
