LA GRANDE — Mac-Hi pounded out 25 hits here Tuesday as the Pioneers opened Greater Oregon League softball play with a doubleheader sweep of La Grande.
The Pioneers used a 10-hit attack, led by Megan Reed’s three singles and three runs batted in, to subdue the Tigers 7-1 in the opener. They then unlimbered their bats for 15 hits in the second game to rout the home team 18-0.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. “We now have the rest of the week off before traveling to Pendleton next Tuesday, then to Baker the following Saturday.”
The Pioneers improved to 11-3 on the season.
Meghan Kimball, Karli Cortez and Colette Robert also contributed run-scoring hits in the first game for Mac-Hi. And Christian singled out Brianna Crewse and Kariss Carrillo for defensive gems.
“Brianna made two great catches in the outfield gaps that saved us two runs,” Christian said. “And Kariss also had two great catches, including a game-ending diving catch in foul territory.
Reed had three more hits in the second game for Mac-Hi, as did Karli Cortez, and they each drove in six runs. Carrillo and Meghan Kimball contributed two hits each for the Pioneers.
“Megan Reed and Karli Cortez just crushed the ball in the second game,” Christian said. “And our hitters in front of them were patient. We drew 10 walks in the game, and for those two girls to pick up six RBIs apiece is huge and clutch for us.”
Colette Robert pitched both games for the Pioneers and turned in a two-hit shutout in the nightcap.
Brandy Blackman had a hit in each game for La Grande.
