GRANGEVILLE, Idaho — Pomeroy enjoyed early leads in both games here Tuesday, but the Pirates couldn’t keep pace with hard-hitting Grangeville as the Bulldogs swept the non-league prep baseball doubleheader 15-5 and 7-4.
Pomeroy drew first blood in the top of the first inning of the first game, but Grangeville bunched seven of its 12 hits and took advantage of four walks in the bottom of the inning and scored eight times. Pomeroy led 2-0 midway through the first inning of the second game, but the Bulldogs came back with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning to once again wipe away the Pirates’ early advantage.
Pomeroy tied the game with a run in the second inning and then took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fourth. But Grangeville struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth and escaped with the victory.
“We stayed right with them in the second game,” said Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer, who noted that four of his team’s seven losses this season have come at the hands of Grangeville. “We had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth inning when they brought in Alex Koberstein, one of their two ace pitchers, and he got out of the inning with one pitch on a double lay grounder. I was just wishing they would have held him out for one more batter.”
Freshman Havin Heytvelt had three hits on the day for Pomeroy and Jared Starin had a pair of hits in the second game.
Pomeroy takes a 1-7 record into next Tuesday’s home doubleheader against Dayton.
