Warriors rally to split with Vikings

MOSES LAKE — Walla Walla Community College scored four runs in the eighth inning of the nightcap of its NWAACC East Region baseball twin bill against Big Bend here Wednesday to key a 6-2 victory.

The win followed a 5-1 Warrior loss to the Vikings to earn WWCC the split and leave them at 3-3 in league play, 11-11 overall.

“We pitched well enough to win both games,” Warrior coach Dave Meliah said. “Jesse (Houser) had a little hiccup in the sixth inning (of the opener), but threw well before then.

“We didn’t do much of anything offensively until late in game two, when we finally strung four or five good at-bats together,” he said. “Fortunately, Drew (Christina) dominated and kept us in the lead until we could give him some breathing room.”

Christina went eight innings in the nightcap, striking out 10 Vikings and giving up just one hit.

In the opener, WWCC’s lone score came in the fourth inning when Jarod Gonzales scored on Ryan Neal’s single.

Walla Walla got on the board first in the nightcap as Kevin Toon scored on a wild pitch.

The scored stayed at 1-0 until the four-run eighth inning, when Neal doubled and scored on Kevin Toon’s double.

Cody Poznanski scored Toon, and then was driven home on Ryan Rambur’s home run to make it 5-0.

Walla Walla plated another run in the ninth, and then watched as Big Bend scored twice in the bottom of the inning before the Warriors closed it out.

The Warriors host Columbia Basin for a twin bill at 1 p.m. Saturday.
