TigerScots down Joseph

ATHENA — Weston-McEwen staked Joseph to an early 5-0 lead but recovered quickly and defeated visiting Joseph 15-5 here Thursday night in a non-league prep baseball game.

The TigerScots not only beat the Eagles, they beat a severe thunderstorm that rolled through the area minutes after the game ended via the mercy rule after six innings of play.

“We were supposed to play a (junior varsity) game, but we could see the storm coming,” W-M coach TJ Haguewood said. “It’s unusual to call a game before it even starts to rain, but we could see what was coming and told the kids to head for home.”

Weston-McEwen, which bumped its season record to 5-2, struck for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to wipe out Joseph’s 5-0 lead. Justin Burke delivered the key hit, a two-out, two-run single in which he fouled off several two-strike pitches before lining the ball into center field.

“If we don’t get that hit, it’s 5-2 going into the second inning,” Haguewood said. “Who knows what might have happened?”

The TigerScots collected nine hits in the game, including KJ White’s first career home run. White had two hits and three runs batted in on the day, Burke also collected three RBI and Calvin Thacker contributed a single, double and triple, scored four runs and knocked in one.

Calvin Thacker, Lance Thacker and White each pitched two innings for W-M and combined for seven strikeouts while walking four.

“After that first inning, I thought we pitched well,” Haguewood said. “We also made some nice plays in the field and played pretty clean baseball.

“It was good to see us respond the way we did after such a lethargic start. It should help us going into league play.”

The TigerScots open Special District 6 play Saturday when they entertain Stanfield in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
