Whitman men roll past Pirates, 9-0

SPOKANE — Fifteenth-ranked Whitman College rolled to a 9-0 win at Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men’s tennis match Thursday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.

The Missionaries improved to 11-6 overall and 8-0 in the NWC, while the Pirates dropped to 5-12, 4-6.

Whitman won all three doubles contests. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham pushed the Missionary pair of Sam Sadeghi and Matt Tesmond before falling, 9-8, with the tiebreaker going to the Missionaries, 11-9, at No. 1 doubles.

Earlier, Whitman’s Andy Riggs and Steven Roston defeated John Talbot and Troy Patterson, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. And Missionaries Noah Lee and Colton Malesovas beat Matt Goebel and Drew Adams, 8-4, at No. 3.

Whitman clinched the team victory with wins in the top three singles matches.

Sadeghi swept Chris Engelmann, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for a 4-0 team score.

Then, Riggs defeated Brigham, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles for the clinching fifth point.

Williams pushed Malesovas, 6-4, 6-4, at the top of the ladder in the closest singles contest of the match.

The bottom three singles contests were also straight-set wins for Whitman.

Alex Noyes edged Dustin McConnell, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 6 in the closest of the three.

Roston beat Talbot, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4, and Lee defeated Blake Miller, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5.
