MILTON-FREEWATER — A pair of Southeast 2B athletes repeated as individual high point winners and the Southridge High School boys and girls claimed team titles here Friday during the annual Carnival of Speed track and field meet at Shockman Field.

Waitsburg-Prescott’s James Thompkins and Allison Wujek of DeSales High School walked away with the individual awards after turning in noteworthy performances. Thompkins swept the boys 100 (11.45 seconds), 200 (22.63), and 400 (51.47) meter events. Wujek won the girls long jump (16 feet, 6.5 inches) and was second in both the high jump (5-2) and 100 hurdles (16.86).

“The day went well,” Thompkins said. “It started badly when we lost the 4x100 relay. After that everything was good. This meet will help me get better.”

“In the 100 hurdles, Allison posted her best time ever,” DeSales coach Michael Scheel said. “We had a lot of kids on (spring) vacation, but the kids that were here did a good job.”

The Southridge boys amassed 185.5 points to easily outdistance second-place Enterprise (85.5). Waitsburg-Prescott (70.5), host Mac-Hi (65.5), and Walla Walla Valley Academy (56) finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in the team standings.

Southridge coasted to victory on the girls side by accumulating 207.75 points. Weston-McEwen (95.5) was second and Mac-Hi (70) placed third.

Friday’s meet was the 76th annual for boys competition and the 32nd for girls athletes.

Seth Deal contributed significantly to W-P’s third-place finish by winning the boys 1500 (4:23.70) and 3000 (9:27.19).

“James had a great meet,” W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said of Thompkins. “Overall, it was not a bad effort. It’s spring break and we were missing some kids, but it was not a big issue. It’s always a nice meet for us.”

Josie Lonai was Mac-Hi’s top performer on the day. She won the girls 800 (2:27.14) and was second in the 1500 (5:14.07).

The Pioneer foursome of Kristi Childers, Susana Romero-diaz, Kitanya Crisman and Veronica Garcia finished second in the girls 1600 relay (4:29.99).

Mac-Hi’s boys boasted a pair of second-place performances. Jesus Saldana was runner-up in the pole vault (10-6) while Sergio Alvarez, Alex Saldana, Tristan Warne, and Raudel Garcia teamed up to take second in the 400 relay (45.74).

“It was a very successful meet — a great, early-season meet,” Mac-Hi coach Stacie Pickler said. “I was impressed with our improvements in our girls relays. Josie PR’d in the 1500 by six seconds.”

Weston-McEwen received strong showings from two of its girls participants — Elizabeth Herbes and Makayla Christopher. Herbes won the triple jump (32-7.5), was second in the 400 (1:03.93), and joined Madison Carlin, McKayla Carlin, and Betsy West to garner second in the 400 relay (52.59). Christopher was second in three individual field events — the javelin (108-7), discus (86-0), and shot put (32-3).

West and Clayton Gaines produced two more second-place finishes for the Tiger Scots in the 300 hurdles (50.50) and the boys discus (123-9), respectively.

“It was fantastic,” Weston-McEwen coach Loran Monaco said of the day’s activities. “We had a lot of good efforts. There were a lot of red, black, and white jerseys up front. It was another great day for track and field — another beautiful day in eastern Oregon.”

Brandon Bissell and Caleb Atkins highlighted WWVA’s day. Bissell was second in both the triple jump (39-3) and long jump (20-1.5), and Atkins finished second in the 100 (11.80).

“We were a little disappointed for some of our kids who were competing for high-point honors,” WWVA coach Dan Solis said. “But it (the meet) gave our kids a chance to compete against some of the best competition in this part of the country. It was a very good meet.”

Dayton had one first-place competitor. Kaitlyn Andrews won the girls javelin (122-10).

Juan Cortez gave DeSales a second-place finish in the 3000 (9:54.14).

Pickler and Scheel also took a moment during the day to salute meet volunteers.

“Without the volunteers, there isn’t any way we could do this,” Pickler said. “The school is accommodating. Many teachers did their part to support the kids. Without the volunteers, we couldn’t have a meet of this caliber.”

“They really run it well here,” Scheel said. “We appreciate everything they do.”
