WALLA WALLA — Two more people will be memorialized in a dedication ceremony at the DUI Victim Memorial Walkway on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The names of former county residents Natalia Zubriski and her son Jolan Wilson will be added to the walkway, at the Mill Creek Sportsplex off Tausick Way.
The two died in an automobile crash on Aug. 22, 2011. The driver of the automobile was found guilty of two counts of vehicular assault and driving while under the influence, said Nancy McClenny-Walters, Walla Walla County Traffic Safety Task Force coordinator.
The DUI Victim Memorial Walkway was established in 2005 by the county Traffic Safety and DUI task forces. It is dedicated to people from the county who were killed as a result of someone driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs here or elsewhere. Zubriski and Wilson are the ninth and tenth names to be added to the walkway since it was started, McClenny-Walters said.
The walkway is a reminder that DUI fatalities continue to affect the lives of friends, family members and co-workers in the Valley, she said.
According to recent statistics she provided, 31 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. are alcohol-related. And they are avoidable. With just a little advanced planning — getting a designated driver, taking a taxi, walking home — DUI fatalities could be zero, saving more than 9,000 lives a year.
