Warriors go 3-1 in NWAACC doubleheaders

WALLA WALLA — Pitchers Haley Freske and Kelsey Locke book-ended a 3-1 Walla Walla Community weekend here in NWAACC East region softball action.

Freske fired a five-inning no hitter as WWCC downed Big Bend 9-0 in Friday’s opener. Locke led the Warriors back from an 11-6 loss to Community Colleges of Spokane in Saturday’s opener, and held the Sasquatch to three runs as the Warriors ripped 15 hits and downed Spokane 11-3 in Saturday’s finale.

In between, the Warriors completed a Friday sweep of Big Bend as Locke pitched the Warriors to an 8-2 win in the nightcap. The Sasquatch inflicted the only Warrior loss of the weekend with the 11-6 win in Saturday’s opener.

The Sasquatch pounded six home runs in winning Saturday’s opener while the Warriors only had one, a shot from Brandy Knowles.

Locke pounded out four hits and Kate Hawk added three as the Warriors put the nightcap away with a seven-run fifth.

Locke homered and the Warriors scored eight times in the fourth to back Freske’s no-no in Friday’s 9-0 opening win. In the second game, Locke and Knowles each collected two hits as the Warriors made the most of six hits in winning 8-2.

The Warriors improve to 5-7 in the East.

“We had a great week of practice,” WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier said. “They played like they can. Now, we need to continue to work hard, keep learning, and get better and better each day. This club will continue to creep up the standings.”

The Warriors travel to Pasco Tuesday for a NWAACC double dip with the Hawks of Columbia Basin Community College.
