Weston-McEwen, Stanfield trade routs

ATHENA — Weston-McEwen and Stanfield traded big innings here Saturday in the opener of Special District 6 baseball action.

The Tigers struck for 12 runs in the fourth of the opener and posted a 14-3 win. The TigerScots came back with a nine-run fifth to earn a split of the doubleheader with a 15-3 win in the nightcap.

“It was a tale of two innings,” W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said. “We walked six guys and had a couple of misplays that they capitalized on (in the opener).”

A single by Joe Baumann and a run-scoring single from Jerad Croswell got W-M even at 2-2 after three, but the roof fell in on the TigerScots as Stanfield plated 12 runs in the top of the fourth to ice game one.

W-M bounced back as Calvin Thacker led off the second game with a single and Nick Pease added a double as the TigerScots plated four runs in the first to take a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers pecked away and got back into it trailing 6-3 heading to the W-M fifth. Pease and K.J. White had back-to-back doubles in the midst of seven consecutive W-M hits and the TigerScots hung a nine on the scoreboard to post a 15-3 win.

“We came back with the right attitude,” Haguewood said. “We made some sweet plays in the field.”

Lance Thacker went all five innings in the second game and finished with a five-hitter.

W-M travels to Pilot Rock Tuesday to continue Special District 6 play.
