Kay Dalene Scholes passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Spokane Hospice House in Spokane. She was born Aug. 27, 1956, in Miles City, Mont., to Richard and Pat Hays. Her father worked for the FAA, leading Kay to attend various elementary schools in Tanana, Alaska, Woody Island, Alaska, Pier, S.D., and Miles City, Mont.
Kay graduated from Custer County High School in 1974. Shortly after, she moved with her parents to Walla Walla. Later she attended Luther College in Regina, Saskatchewan, with her best friend, Lonna. The two also went on a cross-country Greyhound tour for several months.
She held various retail jobs including K-Mart in Walla Walla, before starting work at Bi-Mart. Kay worked at Bi-Mart for more than 35 years. She was loved by her fellow co-workers and customers. They looked forward to seeing her bright smile and friendly persona.
On Aug. 3, 1986, Kay married the red-headed man of her dreams, Ray Scholes. Together they had two children, Rachael and Randy, thus completing her wish of having two red-headed children.
Kay was truly devoted to her family, a loving wife, mother, and daughter-in-law. She enjoyed traveling to see family in several states including Montana, California and Florida. Kay, an avid reader, also enjoyed riding her bicycle, tending her flowers, and her two dogs, Spud and Sparky.
Kay is preceded in death by her grandparents, Fred and Alma Reed. She is survived by her husband, Ray Scholes; daughter, Rachael Pederson and son-in-law Chad Pederson; son, Randy Scholes; her parents, Richard and Patricia Hays of Bigfork, Mont.; brother, Curtis Hays of Olympia; and mother-in-law, Marilyn Troutfetter of Santa Rosa, Calif.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Walla Walla. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at Christ Lutheran Church, 1420 S. Second Ave., Walla Walla.
