PENDLETON — Mac-Hi managed seven hits against Pendleton pitcher Marissa Jones but was able to manufacture just one run as the Buckaroos scored a 4-1 non-league softball victory over the Pioneers here Tuesday afternoon.
The loss dropped Mac-Hi to 11-4 on the season while Pendleton, the No. 1-ranked team in Oregon’s Class 5A rankings (based on RPI) improved to 11-3.
“She’s one of the better pitchers we’ve seen this season,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said of Smith, who struck out 11 and walked two in outdueling the Pioneers’ Colette Robert. “We had our opportunities against her, we just couldn’t capitalize.”
Robert allowed just three hits on the day while striking out 10, walking three and hitting one batter.
Mac-Hi tallied its lone run in the fourth inning when Robert doubled with nobody out and raced home when Megan Reed followed with a double. But three consecutive infield pop flies left Reed stranded on second base.
“We had a lot of other runners on base, but we couldn’t advance them,” Christian said.
Shea Lindsey was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a pair of infield grounders as Pendleton scored its first run in the first inning. Rayne Spencer was credited with an RBI.
Raeghan Lehnert was safe on an error and scored on Darian Lindsey’s two-out double in the second.
In Pendleton’s two-run fifth inning, Shea Lindsey was safe on an error, Spencer walked and Evangelina Olivera doubled home both runners.
“This was good competition that will help us when we get back into league play,” Christian said.
