Spalinger leads ’Dogs to sweep of Pirates

POMEROY — Guy Spalinger went 6 for 7 with two doubles and a triple to lead Dayton High School to a pair of victories over Pomeroy Tuesday in a Southeast 1B-2B doubleheader, 18-7 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap.

Dayton led 6-4 going into a the top of the sixth inning of the first game and batted around the lineup in scoring 10 runs. Spalinger had two hits in the rally — a double and a bases-clearing triple.

“He’s a real good hitter,” Dayton coach Sal Benavides said of Spalinger. “He’s our number two hitter and he’s been coming through most of the year. Any time the bottom of the lineup comes through, that helps a lot.”

Lowden Smith, who started at pitcher in game one for the Bulldogs, had four doubles and a triple in the win. He pitched a complete game while giving up eight hits and striking out 14.

Pomeroy played the Bulldogs closer in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the second before Dayton scored runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead. Pomeroy added another run in the sixth to pull within one, but Dayton picked an insurance run in the seventh to rebuild its two-run lead and Bulldog reliever Christian Warner held the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Dayton (5-5 overall, 2-2 SE2B) hosts league foe DeSales Saturday for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
