PILOT ROCK — Weston-McEwen High School handed Pilot Rock its first loss of the year, 7-2, Tuesday in both schools’ Special District 6 openers in Pilot Rock.
Although the Rockets had six hits in the game and Weston-McEwen had two errors, the TigerScots were able to hold Pilot Rock to just a pair of runs in the third inning.
Molly von Borstel pitched a complete game for the TigerScots, striking out three and walking one.
She used a strikeout in the sixth to escape a two-on jam and got groundouts in the seventh to escape a situation with runners at second and third and one out gone.
“She pitched well under pressure,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said.
W-M scored all the runs it ended up needing in the first inning. Natalie Arnold led off with a single and Taryn Coffman followed with another before Taylor Entze worked a walk to load the bases.
Keegan Shepard hit a two-RBI single and Jessica Lambert capped the rally with another run-scoring base hit.
After the Rockets scored runs in the third to narrow the gap to 3-2, W-M responded with two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the win.
“All around we probably should have had a few more contacts,” Griggs said. “We had a few bobbles in the infield and a few other plays that were shaky, but it was good to get a win in league under our belts.
“I think both teams will look back at this game and say ‘what if’, because we stranded six runners and they stranded eight,” Griggs said. “So you get timely hits and the game could change. We need to continue to work on our defense.”
W-M (9-1, 1-0) visits Touchet Thursday at 4 p.m.
