MILTON-FREEWATER — DeSales High School battled through blustery conditions to finish off a season sweep of Mac-Hi’s junior varsity squad Wednesday, defeating the Pioneers 6-5.
The Irish previously defeated the Pioneers’ JV squad, 12-1, on March 27.
Tuesday’s wind gusts helped cause 11 errors between the two teams, with Mac-Hi committing six and DeSales five.
DeSales led 5-0 going into the home fifth, but three straight errors in the inning allowed four runs to score.
Mac-Hi added another run in the sixth to tie the game at 5-all.
“With the weather that we were dealing with for both teams, I was happy with how we played,” DeSales coach Russ Vera said. “We had some players out of position due to injuries ... but all-in-all, I was happy with how we played, except for our errors. We’ve got to get our errors down.”
The Irish scored the winning run in the seventh when Brie James singled home Allesyn Lyons, who had reached on a walk.
Eighth-grader Kaylee Brown pitched four innings of scoreless ball before Mac-Hi opened scoring in the fifth.
“I’m trying to give her (Brown)some experience and some confidence that she can pitch at the high school level,” Vera said. “She’s doing pretty well. I’m just trying to take it slow with her, I don’t want to overwhelm her.”
The Irish (6-3, 2-0 Southeast 2B) play a league doubleheader at Dayton Friday at 2 p.m.
“Like I told the girls,” Vera said, “it doesn’t matter what the score is, we played how we wanted to play — except for the errors. This was a good tune-up for Dayton on Friday.”
