ONTARIO, Ore. — Walla Walla Community College split an NWAACC East Region doubleheader with league-leading Treasure Valley Wednesday, defeating the Chukars 2-0 in a 10-inning opener before dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
The split leaves the Warriors at .500 in both league (5-5) and non-league (13-13) play.
The first-game win for WWCC was the first league loss of the season for the Chukars, who fall to 9-1 in East Region play and 22-4 on the season.
“We just need to keep working hard in practice and fix a few things here or there, but I still have a lot of confidence in these guys,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. “Our goals are all still right here in front of us.”
Drew Christina and Jake Campeau combined to throw a shutout in game one.
Christina went eight innings, striking out 12 while issuing three walks and three hits.
Campeau relieved Christina in the ninth and kept the shutout alive, giving up no walks and no runs in two innings and striking out one.
The Warriors knocked 10 hits in the game, but they weren’t able to push a run across until the decisive 10th inning.
Ryan Neal and Tony Salas each singled to set the stage for a two-out, two-RBI double from Holbrook for the winning runs.
Holbrook took third on the play after a catching error by Treasure Valley second baseman Ryan Wright and was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Walla Walla starting pitcher Jesse House had a solid seven-inning outing in game two, striking out five and walking one batter while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
But despite six WWCC hits and four TVCC errors in the second game, the Warriors weren’t able to provide more than one run of support in the loss.
The Warriors visit Blue Mountain for an East Region twin bill Saturday at 1 p.m.
