RICHLAND — DeSales High School’s Ryan Baumgart carded a 1-over 73 to lead all golfers at a District 9 Open Invite at the par-72 Columbia Point Golf Course Thursday.
Counting four out of six golfers, the Irish scored a 318 for the low score out of four boys teams at the event. Liberty Christian finished second in 377 strokes, St. John-Endicott third in 387 and Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia fourth in 444.
DeSales’ Jerod Konen (78), Bryce Scott (83) and Lucas Lyons (84) rounded out DeSales counting golfers. Alternates Dan Schaefer and Scott Kimball carded 86 and 94, respectively.
Baumgart had another rough start, finishing the second hole with a triple-bogey after hitting into the water, but the senior birdied five holes to finish at one-over.
Baumgart suffered a lost-ball penalty on the eighth hole of Veterans Memorial Golf Course in a league match Tuesday.
Konen got off to a similarly rough start, carding a 44 on the par-37 front nine at Columbia Point, but he rallied for a one-under 34 on the back nine with three birdies to finish at five over.
“We’re coming around,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “It was a pretty good effort for (the team). It was a good golf day, the greens were rolling pretty well.”
St. John-Endicott won the girls side, with two golfers combining for the low score of 176. DeSales finished second in 219 strokes, Tri-Cities Prep third in 238 and Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia fourth in 248.
St. John-Endicott’s Michal Schuster took medalist for the girls, finishing her round in 78 strokes. DeSales freshman Emily Baumgart finished in second place with an 86.
Elizabeth Ruthven’s 133 rounded out scoring for the Irish.
“That’s high, but she’s new,” Olson said of Ruthven, who was playing in her first 18-hole competition. “She’s working hard.”
The Irish have another District 9 Open at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick on Wednesday.
