DAYTON — DeSales High School’s Ashlyn Lyons pitched a pair of gems and the Irish softball bats were popping Friday as they handed Dayton a pair of Southeast 2B mercy-rule losses, 10-0 and 13-0.
Lyons allowed just four hits and recorded 16 strikeouts in 11 innings of pitching while walking none.
“That was the first two games in a row that she’s pitched this season,” DeSales coach Russ Vera said. “She pitched well in the first game and I thought that I would stick with her in the second game. She pitched tremendous in both games.”
But Vera was most impressed with the DeSales batting, as the Irish rattled off 16 hits and took advantage of 10 Dayton errors in the series.
“We’ve been struggling at the plate the last couple of games,” said Vera, who brought in former DeSales assistant coach Brian Hamada to help run extra batting practices. “We really pushed hitting this week and the girls really responded in both games.”
Brittney Postlewait led the Irish bats for the day, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the first game and 2-for-3 in the second. And Ali Zander left the park for the first time in her career with a two-run home run in the five-run fifth inning of the second game as well.
“Ashlyn (Lyons) is goign to get her hits,” Vera said, “but Brittney (Postlewait) and Allesyn (Lyons, who had four hits) stepped up (Friday) ... Give the assistant coaches credit, they really worked with the girls this week.”
DeSales (8-3 overall, 4-0 in league) plays again Wednesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Colton.
Dayton (5-4, 2-2) visits Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia for a doubleheader Monday at 2 p.m.
