ATHENA — Weston-McEwen upped its Special District 6 baseball record to 4-1 here Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Horizon Christian.
Justin Burke tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven in game one, won by the TigerScots, 2-1. The game-winning run scored on a bases-loaded passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.
“He’s been struggling a little bit, but he battled and kept them off balance,” W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said of Burke. “He threw well and it was good to see. We did not hit the ball very well. It was not fun. We had runners on (base) all day.”
Lance Thacker gave up just five hits over seven innings while Calvin Thacker, Jerad Croswell and Cedric Hall collected two hits apiece in the second game as the TigerScots completed the sweep with a 11-4 triumph.
“He’s been one of our most consistent starters,” Haguewood said. “He’s keeping the ball down. He got his curve over. He’s like an extra position player out there.”
W-M hosts Touchet on Thursday.
