WWCC picks up 1st sweep

PENDLETON — Walla Walla Community College’s baseball team notched its first sweep against an NWAACC Eastern Region opponent here Saturday.

The Warriors defeated Blue Mountain, 8-2, in the first game of the scheduled league doubleheader, then finished off the sweep with a 13-0 blanking in the nightcap that improved their records to 7-5 in the East and 15-13 overall.

Jesse Houser, who had five of WWCC’s 22 hits on the day, led Walla Walla with three hits in game one.

The Warriors won the opener despite being outhit, 13-12.

WWCC’s Brandon Costello threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout in game two, a contest that was called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“It was nice to get two wins on a very windy and miserable day,” Walla Walla coach Dave Meliah said. “The guys did a nice job of not letting the conditions affect how they played.

“It was great to see Jesse Houser swing the bat well and break out a little bit,” Meliah said. “We backed up our pitchers nicely with some solid defense.”

The Warriors host Spokane for a league twin bill Wednesday at 1 p.m.
