WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla High School picked up a narrow Mid-Columbia tennis match win over visiting Richland Tuesday, defeating the Bombers 4-3 after sweeping them in doubles play.
“We have always matched up well against Richland and today was no different,” Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck said. “All but two of the matches were close. All three doubles teams earned valuable points for us today.”
Wa-Hi’s Rosa Tobin and Mari Arceo won a tiebreaker 8-6 for the second set to pick up a victory at No. 1 doubles. Jaime Quaresma and Lexi Swenson fell a set back before winning a tiebreaker in the second set of their No. 2 doubles match and won the second set in a 7-3 tiebreaker to force a third set, which they won 6-2.
Jennifer Bautista and Jazmin Duran rolled at No. 3 doubles, defeating Richland’s Taiana Gardaya and Julia Duncan in straight sets.
Rachel Schueller was within a game of securing a win in No. 1 singles that would have also secured a team victory for the Blue Devils, but Richland’s Anna Lipton prevailed in a second-set 7-1 tiebreaker to force a third set, which she won 6-0.
Allison Mehn provided Wa-Hi’s winning point in the No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Richland’s Maria Tartakovsky.
“We have a busy week — it always is this time of the season,” Peck said. “However, whether it is at the beginning or the end of a tough week like this one, the girls can be counted on to battle hard and fight for every point.”
